FOGSTAR LiFePO4 Lithium Batteries

Fogstar LiFePO4 lithium batteries are from the UK’s largest lithium battery supplier, with exceptionally good warranty (10 years!) and pricing. They are available in 12, 24 and 48V versions.

Lithium batteries are really the only viable choice for electric boat drives, offering massive weight and space savings over “traditional” lead acid. Whilst there are some advantages to single make systems (eg powering your Torqeedo motor with a Torqeedo battery) there is no escaping the fact that there are now much cheaper alternatives on the market. Many customers don’t want to take a “leap in the dark” on this, which is why we have teamed up with Fogstar – the UK’s largest supplier of lithium batteries – to offer their Drift range of LiFePO4 batteries.

LiFePO4 is the safest chemistry of lithium batteries and indeed the only one that many marine insurers will accept. Installed correctly they are actually much safer than lead acid batteries, and much much safer than a tank of petrol or a cylinder full of cooking gas…

Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 lithium batteries are safer still, because the Drift series (that we sell) all have Bluetooth monitoring and heating pads (for charging in cold weather) as standard. They are also rated IP67 on the waterproofing scale.

How much (usable) capacity do they have?

First of all – with apologies to those who know this already – we need to go back to basics! The only useful comparative measure of battery capacity is Watt hours Wh, or kilowatt Hours kWh (1kWh being 1000Wh). Voltage or Amp Hours on their own do not tell you the whole story. You can calculate Watt hours by multiplying Voltage V and Amp hours Ah, for example:

  • a 12V 100Ah battery has a total capacity of 1200Wh, whereas
  • a 48V 100Ah battery has a total capacity of 4800Wh, or
  • a 48V 25Ah battery has a total capacity of 1200Wh (same as the 100Ah 12V battery)

That is not the end of the story though, as some types of batteries can use more of their capacity than others. As a general rule of thumb:

  • you can use about 40-50% of the capacity of lead acid type batteries before you start seriously affecting their life time cycle limit (number of times they can be charged/discharged)
  • you can use about 90% of the capacity of lithium batteries without affecting their life, and 95% is not a disaster (one discharge to 95% has a massive effect on lead acid batteries)

So that’s where the term “usable capacity” appears from, for example:

  • a 12V 100Ah lead acid battery has a usable capacity of about 550Wh (based on 45%)
  • a 12V 100Ah lithium battery has a usable capacity of about 1100Wh (based on 90%)
  • a 48V 100Ah lithium battery has a usable capacity of about 4300Wh

Whilst all three could reasonably be described as “100Ah batteries” you can see they’re completely different in terms of what you can get out of them! So for example in the Fogstar LiFePO4 lithium batteries range:

  • the 48V-125Ah model has 6400Wh total capacity (so at 90% that’s 5760Wh usable, or about the same usable capacity as 10x 100Ah 12V lead acid batteries!)
  • the 12V-105Ah model has 1280Wh total capacity (or 1152Wh usable, or double the usable capacity of a 100Ah 12V lead acid battery)

These are just examples, we can supply any of the Fogstar LiFePO4 lithium batteries – please call if not listed.

How long will they last?

Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 lithium batteries use premium A grade EVE cells, all batch tested and certificated. Whilst they are excellent value, due to Fogstar’s immense buying power, they are also leagues better in terms of quality than the “cheapies” (not even always that cheap) that you may find elsewhere online. Whilst Fogstar do not manufacture in the UK they are a UK company with UK design and UK backup for their industry-leading ten year warranty.

And ten years is by no means ridiculous, since all their batteries are rated for at least four thousand charge cycles (to 80% depth of discharge), easily enough to cycle once a day every day for 10 years. That’s enough even for “liveaboard yachties” to have confidence, and more than most leisure users will ever get near.

Compatibility with ePropulsion & Torqeedo Motors

Fogstar LiFePO4 lithium batteries can be used as a DC supply for anything that wants that voltage (ie 48V batteries for 48V motors, 12V for 12V systems), including electric outboard motors such as those made by ePropulsion and Torqeedo.

What you will lose by using “third party” (in this case Fogstar) batteries is some of the communication/information available in a one-make proprietary system (they often have brand-specific cabling/protocols). That means there will be less, or less accurate, battery information displayed on your tiller or remote control.

HOWEVER… most of the information that you “lose” by using Fogstar batteries instead of ePropulsion or Torqeedo ones is then available instead on your phone, via Bluetooth (and a free app). So arguably more convenient anyway!

Increasing Battery Bank Capacity

The most common application for our customers will be powering 48V outboard motors (or pod motors). At the time of writing (October 2025) Fogstar only offer one 48V battery suitable for marine use, the 48V-125Ah model which has a capacity of 6.4kWh.

That will power an ePropulsion Navy 3.0 outboard (or pod motor) at full power for 2 hours, or at 1kW for 6 hours. Similarly it will power a Navy 6.0 motor at full power for just over 1 hour.

If you need more capacity than this then up to 16 of the Fogstar 48-125 batteries can be wired in parallel, giving a bank capacity of over 100kWh. That is huge though, and might sink your boat (or not fit!)… we have 18kWh on our Sadler 29 and have been very happy with it.

You could also wire 12V or 24V batteries in series to achieve 48V, eg if case sizes better suit the space.

COST COMPARISON

The Fogstar 48-125 compares incredibly well to the ePropulsion and Torqeedo batteries (and many others offered in the marine market, see table below) on price, especially considering they also have Bluetooth and are rated IP67 waterproof. When you calculate the cost per Watt hour (Wh) of capacity:
– Fogstar 48-125 batteries cost 15p per Wh
– ePropulsion E163 batteries cost 46p per Wh
– Torqeedo Power 48-5000 batteries cost 90p per Wh

Fogstar batteries are also compatible with a wide selection of commonly used chargers, MPPT solar controllers and inverters (eg Victron), which ePropulsion batteries currently are not (ePropulsion charging only).
