ORU Bay & Coast Folding Kayaks

The ORU Bay & Coast folding kayaks are fully-decked and can be used with a spraydeck for waves and the open sea. They are light, quick to fold, easy to store, and superb to paddle.

As with ORU’s open cockpit models {link} the first thing most people notice about the ORU Bay & Coast is how little they weigh… in conventional (non-folding) kayak world a 16ft sea kayak that only weighs 16kg is rare and expensive (and the 12ft model is under 13kg!). ORU’s special twin-wall corrugated polypropylene is incredibly stiff and light, and unlike most folding kayaks doesn’t require an internal frame for support.

Being light weight is no use if the kayak’s not good to paddle, but in this respect again ORU doesn’t disappoint. Their light, stiff hulls are very responsive and efficient through the water, making them much faster to paddle than – or less effort to paddle at the same speed as – most inflatables and a lot of (much heavier) conventional plastic kayaks.

In our early days of importing ORU into the UK we had a couple of instructors try the Bay and Coast, and they were mightily impressed by these kayaks’ ability to “edge” and roll back upright after (deliberate) capsize. They were also delighted by how they paddled and went on to buy several for their London-based kayak club.

Please note this page concentrates on ORU’s more “serious” decked kayaks that can be fitted with a spraydeck. Click here if you’re after an open cockpit model for more recreational use in calmer waters: ORU Inlet, Beach & Haven kayaks

ORU Bay ST 12ft Folding Kayak

The 12ft Bay was ORU’s first product, launched 10 years ago – with remarkable success – on Kickstarter. The delight-to-paddle hull form has stayed the same, but over those years it has been through several modifications and is now a very refined product. Today’s “Bay ST” (which could also be called Bay MkIII) is even easier to assemble, more durable, and better waterproofed than the original.

And the Bay is deservedly the veteran of the ORU fleet, it’s a great all-rounder. Paddle it open cockpit (without a sprayskirt) on a nice sunny day in calm waters, you’ve got yourself a really quick and easy-to-manoeuvre kayak that’s also a doddle to transport and store. Acquire a bit more skill and a sprayskirt, you’ve got a very capable 12ft sea kayak. Absolute beginners – and those used to inflatables – may find the Bay “a bit tippy” to start with but actually once you trust the boat and allow it to heel a few degrees it stiffens up (the key is not to get yourself in a “panicky wobble”!).

Several high-level kayakers who’ve bought a Bay as a back-up to their usual kayak, but find in practice they actually use their ORU more – because it’s so much easier to transport!

We know that a lot of people are concerned about the assembly, but honestly it’s not an issue and ORU have some excellent videos showing you how to do it. The first few times will take longer – partly because you don’t know what you’re doing and partly because the folds take a few cycles to “settle in” – but 5 minutes is realistic (the record is about 90 seconds!). That’s probably less time than you’d take to get a conventional kayak on/off your car roof, and securing it properly. On top of which the ORU is much lighter (and therefore easier) to launch.

ORU Coast XT 16ft Folding Kayak

ORU’s 16ft Coast is most easily described as a longer Bay (above)! It’s pretty much the same in the middle/cockpit area, but at 4ft longer in the ends it’s faster (or easier to paddle at the same speed), with even better tracking, making it an excellent touring craft for covering distance. There’s also quite a lot more storage and weight capacity than the Bay – you could take quite a lot of gear with you. It has the same beam (width) but the extra volume does make it feel more stable than the Bay, particularly for taller/heavier paddlers (if you are over about 15 stone).

The slight compromise to that extra speed, tracking, carrying capacity and stability is you need to allow yourself a bit more room when turning etc. If most of your paddling is in a congested area, contending for water with paddleboards, dinghies and larger craft, you might find the Bay a better bet.

Obviously the Coast is also a little bit heavier than the Bay (16.4 vs 12.7kg), and the folding process is slightly more involved… to the extent that there’s one extra fold at each end. It actually fits in the same-size backpack, but fills it more comprehensively.

In kayak design making it longer is the simplest way to make it faster (without hopeless compromises on stability etc), and this definitely applies to the Coast… it’s the fastest kayak we sell, with a long and slender hll that will eat up the sea miles. But it’s not beyond the abilities of beginners, or at least near-beginners, to enjoy a Coast on less ambitious adventures.

What about the Material?

A lot of people worry about this, in particular the effect of folding and unfolding the plastic skin, but it really doesn’t seem to be an issue – and we’ve been selling ORU kayaks for over eight years. Nothing lasts forever, but ORU say the material should last 20,000 fold cycles… and as that’s the equivalent of once a day for 54 years, nobody has ever got anywhere near that limit!

We don’t recommend dragging them (or any other boat!) heavily laden over broken coral, but initial landing on sandy or stony beaches is not a problem – the material is a lot tougher than that used for an inflatable, for example. And the lightness of ORU kayaks has a further advantage in terms of long term durability, they are so easy to pick up and put on your shoulder that you won’t ever need to drag them up the shoreline.

One of the first ORU kayaks we brought into the UK has lived a very hard life fishing for sea bass in the rocky shoreline around the coast of Jersey. It’s been used and abused, far more than most customers ever would. At six years old (when we last saw it) it has to be said it did look pretty battered and scarred, but it was still fully functional as a boat.

Even if (and it’s extremely rare) you do manage to puncture the outer skin, we’ve never hear of anyone continuing that damage right through to puncture the inner skin. If you do puncture the outer skin, any water leaking in between the skins is naturally limited in spread by the vertical “walls” between the two skins, so your kayak will still remain very buoyant.

Lastly on this subject, yes the material can be repaired. As with any modern material you need to use the right glue, but if you do that then the repaired area will be as strong if not stronger than the original.

How can we help?

We understand there is a lot of information to digest when trying to decide which product is for you. We have a lot of knowledge in this space and would love to help you make an impartial, informed decision.
