Electric outboard motors are easy to maintain, here are a few Electric Outboard Motor Top Tips to help you make the most out of yours and enjoy stress-free boating.
1. Understand What You’re Buying!
In particular battery size. The lithium batteries with this type of outboard are a large percentage of the total price. And they vary in size from 500Wh (Watt hours), as supplied with the Torqeedo 603, up to 1276Wh, as supplied with the Epropulsion Spirit Plus. (The Spirit Plus has two and a half times the capacity!) You may not need a big battery, fine, but don’t get conned into buying a smaller one than you expected.
Note: We try to avoid using equations, but “Wh” or “Watt Hours” is the only meaningful comparison of battery size. Amp hours or Voltage alone don’t tell you the full story about a battery’s capacity. Simply, Watt Hours (or Capacity) = Amp hours times Voltage
2. Use WD40 (Other Brands Available!)
Or better still electrical contact spray. Spray into both sides of the connector(s), every couple of months. This simple but often neglected maintenance would eliminate and usually fixes about 90% of “problems” customers have with their electric outboards.
3. Store The Batteries Less Than Full
Forget everything you know about lead acid batteries. In long-term storage – more than a couple of months – lithium batteries prefer to be left between 50 & 70%, and if you do this will retain more of their capacity in the years ahead. The Epropulsion batteries actually self-discharge to about 70% after a few weeks, but the Torqeedo ones don’t… if at 100% run it in a water butt for half an hour before you put it away for Winter.
