ePropulsion eLite Electric Outboard Motor

The ePropulsion eLite has taken the small dinghy/tender market by storm…
it’s Light, Compact, Easy-to-Use and Excellent Value!

ePropulsion eLite

What is the ePropulsion eLite?

The ePropulsion eLite is a new entrant to the “ultralight” category of electric outboard motors. We’ll say right up front, in our opinion it’s excellent. It doesn’t quite take the title of lightest – that still goes to the ThrustMe Kicker – but we don’t think many will accuse it of being heavy!

And for many customers the eLite’s 1.5kg weight disadvantage is likely to be a good swap for its extra battery capacity (and corresponding range/run time), and build quality.

Key Specifications/Features of the ePropulsion eLite:
– weight 6.5kg (plus 1.2kg removable bracket)
– power 500W (up to 750W in boost mode)
– battery capacity 378Wh
– daylight-visible digital display with single button operation
– foldable and extendable tiller
– twist grip control of F-N-R and throttle functions
– quick-release clamp bracket

How do you say it?! It’s not immediately obvious but it’s ePropulsion’s intention that you pronounce “eLite” more as “eee-light” than “elite”.

ePropulsion eLite Compared to its Rivals…

The obvious competitors to the ePropulsion eLite, both of which we also sell, are:
ThrustMe Kicker, which has a 500W motor and 259Wh battery
TEMO 450, which has a 450W motor and 290Wh battery

So the eLite has roughly 35% more battery capacity than its two main rivals. As they’re all about the same power, and all have very efficient electric motors, that also means the eLite will take you about 35% further (at same speed and load).

So it’s already looking quite good for eLite – which you’d probably expect of a new entrant to the market – and we haven’t even talked about price yet… the eLite is £995 against the ThrustMe at RRP £1250 (often discounted now, can’t think why!) and the Temo at £1499.

The ePropulsion eLite doesn’t quite have everything to itself: ThrustMe is lighter, and the Temo’s mounting/tilting design may have advantages if you do a lot of boating in very shallow water.

ePropulsion eLite Handling/Portability

Beside its inherent light weight – complete, it weighs less than the battery alone from an ePropulsion Spirit PLUS or Torqeedo 903, for example – the eLite has been designed with a very nifty detachable clamp bracket. You can remove the motor part (6.5kg) from the clamp part (1.2kg) at the touch of a button. In many situations you can just leave the clamp bracket attached to the boat, and only need to move the motor part (to charge it, for example).

The motor part’s weight also balances nicely around the folded tiller – which is plenty strong enough to carry it by. And the eLite comes with a decent motor bag as standard, making it even easier (barely noticeable one might say!) when carried on your shoulder.

The clamp bracket is very substantial, with three adjustment angles (to cater for different transom shapes), partial tilt/shallow water drive, and full tilt for storage etc.

WHAT’S INCLUDED WITH MY ELITE?

STANDARD ITEMS SUPPLIED INCLUDE: the motor itself, and clamp bracket; motor carry bag; two kill cords; 240V mains AC charger.

OPTIONAL ITEMS INCLUDE: 12V charger/Solar controller; spare clamp bracket (eg if you want to mount on pushpit rail, or two different boats); spare propeller

ePropulsion eLite Range/Run Time

As always, when asked “how far will it go?” we can’t answer without quite a lot of other information! Factors that influence range/run time include: speed, load, boat size and hull type, wind, waves and current…

But what we can say is that the eLite will run flat out – at 500W – for 45mins (the battery has a capacity of 378Wh). And that on a typical inflatable dinghy with two adults in it that equates to about 4 knots, so range flat out is about 3 nautical miles (quite a lot for a dinghy). The same boat will still be doing about 3 knots at 250W, when you get 1.5hrs run time ie about 4.5 nautical miles range.

This won’t be enough for everybody but the ePropulsion eLite works very well for the typical UK yacht tender. From our experience with other electric outboards, a lot of yacht tender users are using somewhere between 250 and 400Wh per day – so the eLite appears to be spot on.

It’s definitely quicker/easier, and with a lot more range, than most people can happily row… and quite possibly – with the quick release bracket – quicker to take on and off than a pair of oars too! It’s also 35% further than the two obvious rivals, Temo 450 and ThrustMe Kicker (with their smaller batteries).

Lastly ePropulsion have given the eLite a boost mode – they actually call it “Sport” but that’s a bit OTT! – where it can run at up to 750W when the battery’s happy (not too hot, cold, or flat). Useful in a strong counter-current for example; the extra 250W does make a genuine difference.

REAL USER EXPERIENCE!
K King, Ipswich said…
“First trial on Tepco 10ft dinghy, very pleased:
– for slow manoeuvring around anchorage I only need about 50 Watts
– for general use in harbour 150 watts gives 3 knots
– 250 watts gives 4 knots
– at 500watts performs much like my old Yamaha 2B at full throttle
– used 20% of battery for 4 journeys of about 600m keeping to moderate but acceptable speed.
– pleased also with the way everything has been well thought out”

NOTE ON EPROPULSION ELITE SHAFT LENGTH

The ePropulsion eLite is available in two shaft lengths, S and L. This can be misleading, particularly “L” which most people assume – not unreasonably! – means “long shaft”. And we are frequently told “Oh no, I won’t need an L shaft for my dinghy”.

But for the eLite, the L option would be better interpreted as “longer than the S… which is really quite short… eLite L is about the same as most outboards call S”. Both are height adjustable and:
– the eLite S suits transom heights of 37cm or less (quite small dinghies)
– the eLite L suits transom heights from 37 to 50cm

If you’re comparing an ePropulsion eLite to an ePropulsion Spirit then the eLite S at its longest is slightly shorter than a Spirit XS shaft; whilst the eLite L is equivalent to a Spirit (and everybody else’s!) S shaft, adjustable up to 4″ shorter if you wish.

A further point of note is that because they’re height adjustable the eLite L at its shortest is very nearly the same length as the eLite S at its longest (they nearly but don’t quite overlap).

We know this (shaft length issue) can be confusing, and can only apologise. We have tried to get ePropulsion to change it, unsuccessfully so far.

ePropulsion eLite HISTORY

The ePropulsion eLite was launched in 2024. However we were involved in its development right from the “brainstorm at a boat show” stage in 2022, through the “let’s make it happen” design/spec meeting in China (March 2023), and then the launch marketing at Dusseldorf Boat Show (Jan 2024).

We are pleased to say the development team do listen and it has many specific features we asked for. We’re probably not allowed to say, but many people comment that the eLite looks like XXXXX – a well-known electronics company (that’s named after a fruit) – could have designed it. The eLite really is very good, and has sold like the proverbial hot cakes since day one (they’re often sold out).

You are welcome to come and see the ePropulsion eLite – alongside its Temo and ThrustMe competitors – by appointment at our warehouse in Christchurch.

But it an eLite is not enough power, or doesn’t have enough battery we also offer many larger electric outboard motors, such as: – ePropulsion Spirit PLUS (1kW, 1276Wh battery) – Torqeedo Travel XP (1.6kW, 1425Wh battery) – and much larger, anything up to the ePropulsion X40 (40kW) if you have the right application!

If you would like to compare the ePropulsion eLite to its obvious rivals, we have them all here, and you are welcome to visit by appointment.

*Further note on shaft length:

  • Our shaft length measurement is from clamp top to upper propeller tip when vertical.
  • Other dealers may quote different measurement points.
  • If your transom height top to bottom measures 37cm or less, choose XS
  • If your transom is between 37 and 47cm, choose S
  • If your transom is between 47 and 59cm, choose L

What you get in the box

The following items are supplied as standard with the Epropulsion Spirit PLUS:

  • motor
  • 1276Wh battery
  • mains charger
  • two magnetic kill cords

It's the same with the Spirit EVO except:

  • you need to specify tiller or remote control. Our “Spirit EVO” price includes one or the other, some dealers price it as separate components.
  • you get a wireless wrist band kill cord (as well as the magnetic kill cords). We’re not very excited about this, it seems to cause as many potential problems as it solves, but some customers like it.

Which Size Shaft – S, L, or XS?

Both the Epropulsion and the Torqeedo spin much larger propellers, more slowly, than comparable petrol outboards. This makes more efficient use of the high torque characteristics of electric motors. BUT a large propeller is only more efficient if it’s actually underwater, and that means the shafts have to be a bit longer. So the “S” shaft electric motors are almost the same length (from top, to bottom of skeg) as an “L” shaft petrol motor. However on some small boats these “S” shaft electric outboards stick down rather deeper than necessary – as in fact do S shaft petrol motors. This is inconvenient when coming into a beach or slipway – so Epropulsion also make an “XS” (Extra Short) version for the PLUS model (not the EVO). This is roughly equivalent to a petrol “S” shaft in total length, and immerses the propeller deep enough on many of the boats we sell including SpearFish, smaller F-RIBs, Nautiraid Coracles, Nestaways, DinghyGo. XS is the most suitable length for most small inflatable dinghies on the market (up to about 3m long), but not some with big tubes and an air floor beneath them (eg Honwaves), which are better served by an S shaft.

The lengths from top of clamp bracket (where it sits on transom) to the upper tip of the propeller (in upright position) are:

  • XS shaft 37cm (suits most small inflatable dinghies)
  • S shaft 47cm (necessary for some large tube inflatables etc)
  • L shaft 59cm (generally purchased for the back of small yachts etc where you want the propeller to be quite deep)

IDEALLY the propeller tip would sit a couple of centimetres below the hull, but on a small dinghy – where the bottom of transom is significantly immersed when loaded – it will still work even if there is a slight overlap. And the outboard not sticking down an extra 10cm (4″) makes a big difference if you land on shallow slipways or beaches frequently.

If you’re worried about this, don’t. We can work out with you which shaft length is most likely to be correct but if you buy one and find out immediately on installation that it’s the wrong size, then for the cost of the postage each way (about £30 in total) and assuming it’s returned to us in brand new condition (unmarked, with all packaging etc), we’ll change it for you. (Subject to availability and cost difference between shaft lengths where applicable.) It’s useful if you can measure top of transom to bottom before phoning or emailing us.

Bulb Size Comparison

ePropulsion eLite Nestaway Boats

For most applications – for example a motor on the back of a dinghy – this is not important.

But if you’re planning to put your motor in a dinghy, dayboat, or small yacht’s “well” – often with a marginal entry/exit slot – it might be. The Torqeedo 1003 and Epropulsion Spirit (shown in blue) are similar but the new Torqeedo 1103 (orange) is quite a bit larger. The 1103 bulb is 323mm long with a diameter of 123mm, the Spirit bulb is 254mm long with a diameter of 108mm.

We’re not sure why there’s such a difference but it’s definitely there, and quite noticeable. Because of this it may also be less convenient to store the 1103 than the Spirit, in some situations. Conversely however the Torqeedos are more compact at the top end than the Epropulsion, this again doesn’t matter for most users but does in some specific situations.

The batteries for both brands can be mounted separately if desired (where a petrol outboard fuel tank would have gone, for example), by means of the optional battery extension cables.

1 review for ePropulsion eLite 500W Ultra Portable Electric Outboard Motor

  1. andrew_smith_gb

We bought this outboard as an easier, cleaner and lighter motor for our tender. The tender is a 2.7m inflatable with an airdeck V-floor. We used it this year (first outing) for a 6 weeks cruise in the Outer Hebrides. We have two small dogs who have to get ashore – so dinghy and motor are used a lot and at times in strongish wind conditions within anchorages. We also carried our 4hp petrol outboard on the boat in case we needed it in adverse conditions. Other than two days in 30knot winds (in the anchorage) where we elected to use the petrol motor, the eLite did all the to-and-fro work, with two adults and the dogs. It worked flawlessly and had enough power to get us ashore at most at 50-60% power. So easy to use and to lift on and off the transom. Charged with the 12v charger when motoring or solar panel when anchored, and the 240v charger when in a marina – initially a small concern, but charge was never was a worry. Our original idea was as a light condition motor and a neat reserve, but quickly became the main motor for almost the whole trip. Great addition to our equipment and a pleasure to use.
