The ePropulsion eLite outboard is a great electric motor for an Ecosse lightweight dinghy. At just 7kg the eLite is super-easy to pass up and down, and it’s difficult to imagine how you could make an outboard more intuitive or easier to use. There’s one button, and a twist throttle, that’s it… no starter cord to put your shoulder out, no carburettor to flood, no fuel to go stale!

Everyone loves the size and weight and ease of use of the eLite, but then asks “will it be enough power?” and “how far will it go?” In short, probably yes. There are many variables affecting range and speed but for an Ecosse 270 (middle of the three sizes) with two adults on board an eLite outboard should give you 3.5 to 4 knots for about an hour (running at about 75% power)… less if you go faster, more if you go slower. If you need more than that there are other options but 3-4 nautical miles is quite a long way in a dinghy, certainly for typical UK use. Obviously if you “need” to stem a 3 knot tide then you’re not going to make much net progress with this setup, but we’d also question whether a lightweight dinghy and outboard is the right equipment for that job (if it’s what you have and you do get in that situation, maybe it’s advisable to wait an hour or two until it dies down a bit).

The transom height on ECOSSE dinghies dictates that you need the L shaft version of the eLite outboard, ideally positioned at about half way on the adjustable track. That is easy to do, and you’d only need to do it once, but if you’re not sure about we can do it for you (if requested at time of purchase).
