The Torqeedo Travel XP L is the long shaft version of Torqeedo’s most powerful Travel electric outboard series, with the largest battery capacity – it has a 1600W motor and a 1425Wh capacity battery. Unlike previous models, the battery for the Torqeedo Travel XP L just clicks on (a bit like a battery drill) and the folding tiller is permanently attached – so there are no fiddly wires to connect. Being a very new design it’s all very slick and modern, with a colour display and Bluetooth integration to an app on your phone (if you wish, not obligatory!). The 1600W motor is direct-drive, so very quiet, and a noticeable step up from the 1kW class (eg Torqeedo 903, ePropulsion Spirit), particularly in terms of torque or “shoving power”. Other welcome improvements include the tilt bracket, which now offers shallow water drive settings, and the tiller which can be angled much higher (so doesn’t snag on seats etc when tilted up). It’s German-made, from the best-known brand in the industry. As the L shaft model the Torqeedo Travel XP L is suitable for boats with relatively high transoms up to about 60cm tall (measuring top to bottom). It’s IP67 water-resistant, lightweight (and divides into two main parts), incredibly easy to use, and all-but maintenance free (other than very basic DIY such as contact spray in the connectors). The LCD display on the tiller shows how much battery you’ve got left, speed and range (GPS-derived), and how much power you’re using.
